Jess Hardin* has over 40 years experience in the application of crushed carbide to down hole fishing tools. His standout career has included stints with Hunt Tool Company, Wilson Downhole, Baker Tools, Donham Oil Tool, Tri-State and Weatherford International in Alaska, Wyoming and Texas. As one of the industry’s most highly qualified carbide applicators, Jess most recently, 12 1/2 years as Weatherford International’s domestic and international carbide application trainer. He is a certified OPITO assessor and was charged with training, auditing and certifying Weatherford’s welders and welding shops globally. Services include three levels of carbide application training, auditing of welders and welding shops, and consulting on shop procedures and standards for the application of crushed carbide and carbide inserts. *Mr. Hardin is not employed by Dynalloy and is independent.

Program 1


This program focuses on the beginning welder and lasts two weeks. The length and intensity of the program can be adjusted to fit any schedule. Skills learned include:

  • Laying out a shoe or mill from a print
  • Extensive instruction on preheating mills or shoes to correct temperatures
  • Basic braising and bonding techniques
  • Proper crushed carbide chip placement
  • Torch heat control
  • Recognizing, removing and replacing burned chips
  • Managing pinholes and voids

Program 2


This is an intermediate program intended for welders with some experience in the application of crushed carbide. The program lasts one to two weeks, depending on the skill of the welder. Skills addressed include:

  • Review of fundamentals of Program 1
  • Correcting any bonding or chip placement issues
  • Application of carbide inserts to mills and shoes

Program 3


This is an advanced level program for welders who excel in Programs 1 and 2 and wants to establish a larger skill set. This program varies in length, depending on the skills the welder wants to address, such as application to specialty tools like casing exit mills.
