WIRE

Hardbanding, as a method for protecting drill pipe tool joints from premature abrasive wear, has been in wide spread use since the late 1930’s. Tungsten Carbide has traditionally been embedded into the overlay to further extend tool joint wear life. In open-hole conditions where casing wear is not a concern, Tungsten Carbide embedded in a tough, wear resistant matrix still provides the maximum wear resistance for tool joints.

POSTALLOY© ULTRABAND™ NM

Ultraband™NM is a hard, 100% crack free Hardband designed for non-mag drill collars and related components. Control of critical elements has resulted in a hardband alloy that meets magnetic permeability specifications and offers substantially improved wear resistance compared to conventional non-mag welding alloys, like 310 stainless – a 400% to 500% improvement. In addition, the abrasion resistance of Ultraband™NM is 400% to 500% better than drill collar base materials.

POSTALLOY© TUFFBAND© NC

Postalloy© Tuffband© NC is a high hardness hardbanding wire that may be used by itself for casing friendly hardband applications or used as a weld matrix with Tungsten Carbide (WC) when casing protection is not a factor.

POSTALLOY© DURABAND© NC

Postalloy© Duraband© NC is a 100% crack-free hardbanding wire that provides maximum protection of the tool joint and casing. It’s microstructure consists of a hard, but tough tool steel matrix with a high volume of tightly packed micro-constituents. This combination ensures excellent wear resistance in open hole drilling as well as being casing friendly. Duraband© NC is unique. It is *Fearnley Procter NS-1TM Certified for new applications and it is the only product to be certified for re-application over itself and certain other products. It is the only product for maximum protection that is applied crack-free.

Application

For oil and gas industry applications such as non – magnetic drill collars, stabilizers and MWD/LWD drilling tools and related components – optimized for improved wear resistance.

Ultraband™NM can be applied directly on to non-mag tools and over previous layers of 310 stainless. Used by itself, Ultraband™NM provides excellent wear resistance. For additional wear protection. a non-magnetic “cast tungsten carbide” may be dropped into the weld. Recommended size is 20-30 or 30-40 mesh at a drop rate of approximately 40 grams per minute. Deposits are smooth and free of any slag. Re-application is easy providing the worn deposit is clean and free of defects. Please contact our Engineering Department for complete procedures.

Application

Hardbanding deposits are NON CRACKING, providing proper preheat, interpass and cooling temperature procedures are followed. The microstructure consists of a hard, but tough tool steel matrix with approximately 55Rc hardness. Deposits are extremely CASING FRIENDLY. Tuffband® NC can be applied over itself without removal, but only if the surface has been properly cleaned and inspected. Tuffband® NC can be applied over certain previously hardbanded competitive products providing that the worn deposit is 1/32” thick or less.

DURABAND® NC microstructure consists of a hard, but tough tool steel matrix with a high volume of tightly packed micro-constituents. This combination ensures excellent wear resistance in open hole drilling as well as being CASING FRIENDLY. Typical hardness values of 57-60Rc can be expected when applied to new tools or properly rebuilt joints. Deposits are smooth and free of any slag. DURABAND® be applied over itself and over TUFFBAND® NC without removal, but only if the surface has been properly cleaned and inspected. Duraband NC can be applied over some competitive hardband products without removal.
